KIA’s Ryu Ji-hyuk (29) was taken to the hospital after suffering a collarbone injury while running the bases.
Ryu Ji-hyuk started at first base in the final game of a three-game midweek series against SSG in the 2023 KBO League regular season at Gwangju-Kia Champions Field on Aug. 8 and went 1-for-3 with two walks and one RBI.
In the bottom of the second inning, he was safe at home on a wild pitch from third base. That’s when he collided with pitcher Jong-hoon Park. He complained of great pain and was immediately taken to the hospital.
In the first inning, he drew a walk. In the second inning, he drew a bases-loaded walk. He went to second on Park Chan-ho’s infield single in front of the third baseman and advanced to third on Socrates Brito’s single.
Choi Hyung-woo was hit by a pitch from SSG starter Park Jong-hoon. Ryu Ji-hyuk wasted no time in running home, sliding in head-first.
Kim Min-sik caught the ball and fired to Park Jong-hoon, who was in cover at home. Ryu Ji-hyuk was faster and the result was safe. However, Jong-hoon’s lower body collided directly with Ryu’s shoulder.

A KIA official said, “Ryu Ji-hyuk is on his way to Seonhan Hospital. He will undergo CT and MRI scans. The injury is to his left collarbone.”
