Shohei “Idoryu” Ohtani, 29, of the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball, has been named the American League Player of the Month for the second consecutive season. He won the honor in June and again in July. In the National League, Cody Bellinger, 28, of the Chicago Cubs, was named Player of the Month.
Ohtani was named to the July Player of the Month list, which was announced by the MLB office on July 3. This is the fourth time in his career that he has been recognized as the top performer during the month of July. He received overwhelming support with little competition.
Performed well both on the mound and at the plate. On the mound, he made four starts and pitched 29.1 innings. He went 2-2 with a 4.97 ERA and 29 strikeouts. As a hitter, he swung a hot bat. In 23 games, he batted .282 with nine home runs, 14 RBIs, 21 runs scored, and a 1.152 OPS.
In the National League, Bellinger was named Player of the Month. Flapping his resurgent wings this season, Bellinger hit .400 in July with eight home runs, 24 RBIs, 21 runs scored, and a 1.122 OPS. The 2019 NL MVP, who batted fourth for the Los Angeles Dodgers, was released after last season due to a severe hitting slump. He moved to the Chicago Cubs, where he’s been hitting well of late. He won NL Player of the Month for the second time since April 2019.
